How to Be a Great Host During the Holidays

With the holidays on the horizon, odds are you're going to want to showcase your new Trusst-built home in the grandest of styles. And, let's face it; there's nothing more fun than decorating and hosting your first holiday party in your new home.

But, being a good host is another thing entirely. If you are expecting family or friends to be staying overnight, you have to be prepared in order to give them a relaxing and memorable visit. If you're new to hosting, don't worry; our builders in Southport NC have you covered. Just follow these tips and you'll be the perfect host during the holidays.

#1 - Double Check Your Guests' Visiting Dates

In order to ensure you're prepared, you should confirm when your guests will be expecting to arrive. If they are flying in and you are picking them up at the airport, double check their traveling information so you can be where you need to be at the right time. You can even pre-arrange a meeting point in the airport so you don't have to spend too much time trying to find your guests.

#2 - Ask About Any Key Issues in Advance

If one of your guests has any allergies or other issues, such as needing to adhere to a strict diet, then these are things you will want to know well in advance so you can make sure you have dishes planned for that guest. The same consideration applies to guests who are bringing children with them. Kids can be finicky eaters, so find out what the kids like so you can have something on hand that they'll enjoy.

#3 - Prepare Your Guest Rooms with Essentials

Every guest room needs to have certain items in order for your guests to feel more comfortable. For instance, the room should be nice and clean with cozy fixtures, fresh sheets and comforter, window coverings, extra blankets, a light, a wastebasket, bath towels, and an empty drawer or two that they can use. You should also pick up a few extra toiletries to have on hand in case your guest forgets to bring something. If your guest room does not have an attached bathroom, keep a nightlight in the hall so your guest can find the bathroom safely.

#4 - Let Your Guests Know What You Have Planned

It might be fun to surprise your guests with a trip to the mountains for a day spent skiing or a trip to the tree farm for your Christmas tree, but if they didn't pack accordingly, then they'll be cold and miserable the entire time. If you have something planned that might require special clothing, be sure to let your guests know ahead of time so they can pack for your planned activities.

#5 - Make Your Home Warm and Comfortable

Your living room should be made as warm and cozy as possible. This way, when your guests arrive after their long trip, then can sit down and relax. If they're coming in late at night, make sure your home is well lit, light some candles, and have a place ready for your guest to sit. Offer them a snack and a drink regardless of when they show up.

#6 - Show Guests to Their Rooms

Instead of telling your guest to take the room at the far end of the hall, personally show them to their room while helping them with their luggage. Show them where the extra blankets, towels, and other necessity items are kept. If your home has any quirks, then this will also be a perfect time to let your guest know about them. Since showers can vary greatly, yours may seem foreign to your guests. Therefore, show them how to use it before they take their shower.

#7 - Be Considerate of Your Guests' Sleeping Habits

If you are an early riser, but your guest is not, then be as quiet as possible until they get up. This is especially important if you have guests sleeping in your living room. #8 - Encourage Your Guest to Feel at Home Let your guest know that they don't have to ask you every time they want something to eat or drink. Encourage them to help themselves and to feel at home. Show them where your silverware, plates, and cups are, as well as the garbage cans, so they can navigate the kitchen easily.
