10 Tips for Maximizing Space this Thanksgiving

10 Tips for Maximizing Space this Thanksgiving

November 19, 2014

Thanksgiving is one of America’s most beloved holidays and it is one in which family members far and wide often convene to celebrate, give thanks, and enjoy a delicious and traditional meal. But, it is not a holiday without its own share of challenges, one of the most difficult being finding the space to fit all of your guests at the dinner table.

If you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year and seating arrangements are coming up a little short on square footage, try these ten tips from our Leland NC home builders for maximizing space.

Sit People Hip-to-Hip

Thanksgiving is about being close to the ones you love, right? Well, fall back on this excuse when setting your dining room table. Situate the seats close enough together so everyone can fit at one table but still have enough room to slice their turkey without knocking over their neighbor’s glass of wine. Sure, it might be cramped, but once the conversation starts, nobody will pay attention.

Set Up a Kids-Only Table

If your family has a lot of little ones, then having a table dedicated for them will not only make them feel special, but it will help bring long lost cousins closer together. Place some crayons, paper, and other age-appropriate activities on the table and they’ll be captivated in their own world all throughout the dinner.

Use Benches Instead of Chairs

If you have a long rectangular dining room table, then get rid of the chairs for the day and use bench-style seating instead. This will enable you to fit more people at the table.

Branch Seating Out to Other Rooms

Do you have a few uncles that really love football? Set up some dinner trays in your living room so they can enjoy their dinner without missing the games. Or, if you have a den off of your dining room, then open up the doors and extend your dining room with a card table or two.

Bunch Tables Together

If one table won’t be enough, then bunch together a few different tables and cover them with a few tablecloths to give the impression of one large table. Just keep in mind any meeting points where one table is slightly higher than another as you don’t want to set any liquid-holding containers down on the uneven crease.

Mismatch Seating

When you’re family gets together after not seeing each other for a while, nobody is going to notice that your seats don’t match. If you don’t have enough matching chairs, fill up the remaining seats with whatever you have – folding chairs, benches, an office chair, etc.

Put Every Corner to Use

When space is at a premium, it is important to utilize it all. If you have to, place a small card table in a corner of the dining room with two chairs.

Use Your Island

A kitchen island not only provides valuable extra preparation space for the day’s big meal, but it also works great as extra seating space. Place a few barstools along the island and you can fit quite a few people there.

Use the Window Seat

If you have a window seat, place a few folding dinner tables in front of it and you’ll gain four or five additional dinner placements and those guest lucky enough to grab those seats will also enjoy a great view to go with a great meal.
