December 11, 2018

Getting ready for the winter holidays can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be if you prepare your home the right way. Trusst home builders in Wilmington NC believe that your home is a reflection of your unique family. Put your home’s best foot forward for the the winter holidays with these eight tips for getting ready for the holidays.

1. Prepare Early
The key to stress-free holidays is early preparation. As soon as the Thanksgiving turkey is gone, or even before, it’s time to plan for guests, parties, menus, and decorating. Make lists and a timeline.

2. Start with a Clean Slate
Decorating a dirty house is like putting lipstick on a pig. After Thanksgiving, give the oven and fridge a good cleaning. Go through stacks of papers, old toys, and other things to purge your home of unneeded stuff.

3. Take Care of Home Maintenance
After purging and cleaning, take care of minor home maintenance. Do leaves need to be blown or raked? Do the gutters still need cleaning? Take care of any indoor repairs as well.

4.Spruce Up Main Spaces
Focus on your home’s main spaces such as the living room, entryways, dining area and bathrooms. Declutter areas by placing items in a laundry basket that you can hide in the closet.

5. Plan for Decorating
Now’s the time to hit the basement or attic and take out the decorations. Do an inventory. Check lights. Purchase new items as needed. Take a December weekend, order dinner delivered, and enlist the family to help.

6. Use Good Holiday ‘Scents’
Day-to-day living doesn’t always smell fresh, especially if you have kids and pets. Add a few of the holiday scented candles that are available. Fresh greenery can help as well. You don’t have to have a real tree; use greenery in baskets or in centerpieces.

7. Prepare for Guests

If you have overnight guests coming for the holiday season, prepare guest rooms and bathrooms now. Put the bed together with fresh linens. Put your best towels in the bathrooms along with some nice hand soap. Do your guests have babies? Spend time to make sure your home is baby-proof.

8. Plan the Holiday Meal

Make your menus for holiday meals early, and shop as soon as time will allow the foods to still be fresh for preparing. Take inventory of your holiday dishes and wash them. Don’t forget to put together a pretty table arrangement.
